Tashi Dorji is a Bhutan-born guitarist based in Asheville who has carved out a unique niche for himself within contemporary avant-garde. His music arises in the moment: raw, intuitive and uncompromising, balancing between silence and explosion.
His rich solo-discography includes Stateless (2020) and We Will Be Wherever the Fires Are Lit (2024), among others. Drag City released his latest electric album earlier this year, Low Clouds Hang, This Land Is on Fire: the next step in a constantly evolving oeuvre.
Dorji is also one half of Manas, a duo with drummer Thom Nguyen, and co-founder of the free jazz trio KUZU, alongside saxophonist Dave Rempis and drummer Tyler Damon. He has worked with an impressive array of artists, including Mette Rasmussen, Susie Ibarra, Efrim Manuel Menuck, Alex Zhang Hungtai, John Dieterich, Audrey Chen, Joe McPhee and, more recently, Tony Buck, Terrie Ex, Andy Moor, bassist John Edwards and drummer Steve Noble.
Whether he plays solo or in a collective: Dorji’s style – rooted in alternative tunings, prepared guitar and spontaneous expression – embodies radical attention, rebellion and collective transformation. Expect no songs or structures, but rather an intense listening experience in which everything is laid on the line.
Jean DL is a musician and video artist who approaches sound and image in a unique way. His music creates dreamy, evocative soundscapes, whilst his films evoke emotion through a musical structure. He enjoys exploring the organic side of music, with a focus on space, acoustics and improvisation.
Collaborations with artists including Julia Kent, Farida Amadou and Lee Ranaldo demonstrate his wide-ranging artistic network.
Jean D.L. thus operates at the intersection of sound, image and imagination.
