Showcase of multi-talented, highly eclectic griot artists with punk attitude
Versatile Brussels artist Kaito Winse is not only a singer, dancer and multi-instrumentalist. Above all, he is a guardian of the rich oral traditions of his homeland Burkina Faso. He was born in the desert to a family of griots in the far north of West Africa, where he “only had to bend down to pick up the legacy”. With the somewhat forced transfer of a thousand lives and a thousand deaths, he now passes on the ancestral stories in song form.
Seeing Kaito perform live is an intense experience in itself. He plays instruments like the calabash, the mouth bow, the Peul and the toutlé flute and – especially passionately – the tama (a drum with which speech is imitated). His robust and mesmerizing voice evokes the intensity of opera performances, in part thanks to his collaboration with French writer, actor and playwright Tartar(e) who has clearly honed his ability to captivate with rhythm and word.
Kaito is a musical chameleon who throws himself into a wide range of artistic projects: he can be found in the experimental noise-punk band Avalanche Kaito, in the duo Kaito Kai with DJ Palmbomen II, and in diverse jazz projects under the direction of Fabrizio Cassol and Robbe Latré. A hugely eclectic artistic universe that gains even greater proportions live. Since his acclaimed debut album Kaladounia in 2020 and his recent release Reele Bumbou, Kaito has graced stages all across Europe (ESNS, Womex, Supersonic, Les Vieilles Charrues, Ment, Down The Rabbit Hole, Dour, Nuits Sonores, Huy Art Festival, BRDCST, ...).
Kaito XXL is a full-length showcase of Kaito’s many guises, a unique opportunity to (re)discover an exceptional artist in three of his musical projects: Kaito Winse solo, Avalanche Kaito (Kaito Winse, Benjamin Chaval and Nico Gitto) and Kaito Kai (Kaito Winse and Kai Hugo, also known as Palmbomen II).
During Kaito XXL you can also discover Kaito’s collaboration with the atypical Brussels a-capella ensemble Ravekoor, known for their closing shows during night-time parties (Brussels Rave koor is atypisch: 'Zingen in een nachtclub 's morgens vroeg is magisch' | BRUZZ).
