Meet the artist: who is Luwten?

Dutch dream-pop artist presents new album

Dutch artist Tessa Douwstra writes, produces and performs refined dreamy pop that tickles both heart and mind under the moniker LUWTEN. In the past, her music was an attempt to shed light on the introverted person, to find comfort in one’s own loneliness and egoism.

To get to know our artists even better, we serve them a few simple but not unimportant questions. Meet Luwten!

What do you do in daily life?

I write and make music, I like to drink coffee while I watch people, I like to ask questions of people and, as of late, I also ride horses.

Who is/are your greatest musical influences?

Sounds where you can’t hear anymore where they come from. I love when music is a combination of something otherworldly and something familiar.

What is your favourite place?

My studio, my bed and the car. I love being on the road and I can really enjoy rows of white windmills and ecoducts. I think its such a funny concept that you have nature, you put an asphalt road over it, and then on top of that you build nature again.

What are your musical ambitions?

To not allow myself to be distracted and to make things that mean something to me.

What is your favourite instrument?

My computer.

Do you come to AB and Brussels often?

Not often at all. This will be my second time here and my second time in AB

What are you expecting from your show at AB?

That it will be fantastic to have my new album heard here in Belgium.

Are there special requests on your rider?

The most exciting thing at the moment is peanut butter, I think, but my band would like a scratch card.

What is the best concert you ever saw?

Ooh, too many to choose from, but the most recent one that really stands out was Aldous Harding in Paradiso. So focused and enchanting.

What is the next concert you will go to yourself?

I’m going to see Luka in Arnhem soon – I’m going to admire my drummer Joost there from the other side of the stage – and I’ve just bought tickets for James Blake.

What is your favourite food?

Fries with mayonnaise

What impact did corona have on your creativity?

I’ve been very busy making videos: I think that because there were few opportunities to play , I went in search of something else to carry the music to the outside world and I’ve spent many hours working on developing choreographies and other ideas for film. I have the impression that you can experience music even better when you have something to look at, if you can use multiple senses.

Do you have anything important you would like to mention?

No, not really. I recently saw a beautiful documentary “No Hay Camino” by Heddy Honigmann with a title inspired by a poem from Antonio Machado, which goes: “Wanderer, there is no road / you make the road while walking”. I thought that was wonderful, so maybe it’s a nice note to end on.
