Is there room for parenthood in the music sector?
How do you take on a society that seems not to be shaped for the person you are? That’s the question that She They Us hopes to answer. Through five themed episodes, the characters show how they are faced daily with discrimination at the intersection of skin colour, gender, sexuality, religion and class, and how each of them strives for a world of equality that fits their lives, jobs, passions and bodies better. Each episode deals with a key aspect of our lives, such as acceptance, protest, and legislation.
She They Us is about the hopeful struggle for a future in which everyone is valued equally, and how change can be brought about by supporting each other.
AB, VI.BE and Cassette for Timescapes will screen the episode on parenthood in the AB Club. In this episode, artist Charlotte Adigéry plays a central role, during Belgian Music Week. Her pregnancy could not have come at a worse time. Desperately searching for other examples in the music industry, she embarks on a tour of the UK with her baby.
But is there a ‘right’ time to start having children? Does the decision to have children always have to feel like giving up our career opportunities? What adjustments are required to make the music business more child-friendly? In short, is there room for parenthood in the sector?
These are a lot of questions, and together with a range of panellists as well as the audience, we will try to find the answers and solutions. We will start the evening with the screening followed by an interactive panel discussion with moderator Marianne Cattoir and panelists Selah Sue, Porcelain id, Jarri Van Der Haegen (manager Charlotte Adigéry) and Marjan Reynders (Pukkelpop, HAJEE!).
Do you have experiences as a parent in the music industry that you’d like to share? Or would you just like to join in? Make your voice heard and come along! We need you!
She They Us is a production of the Ghent production house Cassette for Timescapes and was directed by Zaïde Bil, Sam Peeters and Heleen Declercq.
This event is held in partnership with VI.BE as part of Belgian Music Week.
