Vintage Highlife grooves with a funky vibe
Santrofi is a dynamic, eight-member collective of talented young musicians from Accra, brought together by bassist and producer Emmanuel Ofori – known for his work with Highlife legend Ebo Taylor and Pat Thomas’ Kwashibu Area Band. Their goal is to celebrate the classic Highlife music in all its diverse variants and influenced styles, from early Afro-Cuban and calypso influences to funky soul rhythms and the Nigerian influences of Afrobeat and Juju grooves.
Five years after their acclaimed debut album Alewa, Santrofi returns with a new album that was recorded and mixed by four-time Grammy Award winner Jerry Boys (REM, Ali Farka Touré, Buena Vista Social Club, Orchestra Baobab, Kronos Quartet). Making Moves is both a celebration of Santrofi’s roots and a leap into the future of Highlife. For the album, they worked with several artists from the Afrobeat and trap scene in Ghana, such as Kofi Jar and Ara.
The title track is about trying to survive on the sometimes crazy streets of Accra without losing your mind: “Life has never been easy, so just keep moving”, is the first line. So buy a ticket and come dance your cares away at AB Club!
