Two duos present adventurous new work
On a Tuesday and a Wednesday is the first collaboration between Pierre Bastien and Casper Van De Velde. The album came about during a two-day residency at Werkplaats Walter in Brussels, at the invitation of the Blickwinkel label.
During their improvised sessions, they soon found a way to fuse Bastien’s famed mechanical sound sculptures with the playful and detailed style of percussionist Casper Van De Velde. The result is a mix of intricate rhythms and organic music that flows effortlessly between the intimate and the expansive.
Pierre Bastien (Paris, 1953) is a French musician, composer and experimental instrument builder. He began making mechanical musical instruments at a young age, making use of objects such as metronomes, cymbals and pulleys. In 1977, Bastien began working with Pascal Comelade to compose music for dance performances. He was also a member of ensembles like Operation Rhino, Nu Creative Methods and Effectifs de Profil.
Bastien collaborated with well-known artists such as Robert Wyatt, Jac Berrocal, Emmanuelle Parrenin, Jaki Liebezeit, Pierrick Sorin, Lukas Simonis and Issey Miyake. His work is released by labels like Lowlands, Rephlex, Tigersushi and Alga Marghen. Aside from his musical career, Bastien also completed a PhD in 18th century French literature, with a thesis focused on the pre-surrealist writer Raymond Roussel.
In 2017, acclaimed drummer Casper Van De Velde graduated from the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp. Together with Hendrik Lasure, he forms half of the duo schntzl that has already released albums on W.E.R.F. and Cortizona. Casper is also involved in several other projects, such as Donder, Bombataz, Warm Bad, Schreel Van De Velde and An Pierlé Quartet.
hum. is the sonic world of Berlinde Deman and Mirko Banovic. They met during their collaboration with Flat Earth Society. The duo invites you to an unusual encounter between serpent, bass guitar and electronics. A sparse dialogue unfurls in hum. with slow-cooked melodies, a soundscape that balances between silence and unease, in which every note is both fragile and charged.
