BRDCST is AB’s most genre-fluid festival, as also evidenced in the line-up on Sunday 7 April with BCUC, Slauson Malone 1, Moin, Holy Tongue, Attila Csihar presents ‘The Nosferatu Project’, Benefits, Chalk, PRUILLIP, Clarissa Connelly, Shida Shahabi, Gordan, Lenhart Tapes, Niecy Blues and Flora Yin Wong.

14:30 - 16:00 @ (cinema) Palace > ATTILA CSIHAR PRESENTS ‘THE NOSFERATU PROJECT’ (1922): LIVE SCORE (HU) 

Another guest of honour is legendary Hungarian extreme metal vocalist Attila Csihar, best known for his work with the influential Norwegian black metal band Mayhem and drone ensemble SUNN O))). He is living proof that black metal can no longer be ignored in the avant-garde arts. Aside from his project ‘Void ov Voices’, Csihar presents at BRDCST ‘The Nosferatu Project’: a live soundtrack to the 1922 first real film adaption of the book Dracula by Bram Stoker. A windfall for Csihar, who presents this Belgian première over the road at our neighbour: arthouse cinema Palace. 

16:30 - 17:15 @ AB Club > LENHART TAPES (RS) 

Lenhart Tapes is the alter ego of Belgrade-based cassette collector and noise musician Vladimir Lenhart, also known as ‘The Walkman Alchemist’. His latest album Dens is “a stunningly sophisticated collection of vital new interpretations of traditional songs from across the Balkan” according to The Wire, which also previously referred to their music as “raw and miraculous". The guest role is filled with verve by BRDCST visitor Svetlana Spajić. 

17:00 - 17:45 @ Rijke Klarenkerk > FLORA YIN WONG (UK) 

Flora Yin Wong is a London-based producer and DJ with Chinese and Malaysian roots. She often works with religious images as a point of departure. Her latest album Cold Reading was released via Modern Love (see too: Andy Stott, Lucy Railton, …) and hovers between dreamy pop, contemporary classical, and musique concrète, and is, she says, strongly influenced by Giuseppe Tartini’s famous composition

Devil’s Trill Sonata.

17:40 - 18:30 @ AB Flex > SLAUSON MALONE 1 (US) 

Already a Warp icon: Jasper Marsalis – son of the famous jazz trumpet player Wynton Marsalis – also known as SLAUSON MALONE 1. Marsalis provided beats for Solange and Earl Sweatshirt, amongst others, and his Warp debut Excelsior is a “masterpiece of American surrealism. As if Frank Ocean’s ‘Blonde’ was re-imagined as Brain Wilson’s ‘Smile’” according to Line Of Best Fit. His shows can better be described as performances. Oor (about his visit to Le Guess Who?): “Malone 1 begint zijn set al improviserend op akoestische gitaar. Dan springt hij het publiek in, krijst in de microfoon, klimt weer het podium op, deconstrueert zijn liedjes tot verwarrende collages, citeert Afrika Bambaataa en covert producersgenie Joe Meek’s ‘I Hear A New World’.”

18:15 - 19:00 @ Rijke Klarenkerk > NIECY BLUES (US) 

Uncut: “The Charleston-based singer and producer pushes the avant-R&B stratagems of Kelela and Solange to new extremes of abstraction in airy soundscapes that also evoke Laraaji and Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith.” Boomkat: “This one's special. She’s using the language of ambient, trip-hop and dream pop to ink her own signature on gospel, R&B and melancholy soul. We've been knocked sideways by this one - essential listening if you're into KeiyaA, Grouper, Erykah Badu or Dawuna.”

18:15 - 19:15 @ AB Club > GORDAN (RS)

Ever since we saw The Life and Death of Marina Abramović by Robert Wilson in 2011, one voice – aside from that of ANOHNI – has remained with us to this day: that of Serbian singer Svetlana Spajić. So BRDCST is proud to also do a double feature. Spajić is namely the protagonist on Shara, Gordon’s brand new album, “the unlikely trio of the breathtaking traditional ethnomusicologist Spajic, and two Berlin-based noise and experimental musicians. They celebrate a dark and dystopian take on ancient Balkan folklore”. 

19:00 - 20:00 @ AB Flex >HOLY TONGUE (UK) 

Holy Tongue is the second project Valentina Magaletti brings to BRDCST. Together with producer Al Wootton and Susumu Mukai, she evokes the vibe of the experimental dub of On-U-Sound, 23 Skidoo, Liquid Liquid, and ESG.

20:00 - 20:45 @ AB Club > PRUILLIP (BE) 

Closer to home, we found the explosive duo PRUILLIP: a project by Annelies Van Dinter (Echo Beatty) and Louis Evrard (Grid Ravage). At the invitation of Dennis Tyfus, they played their very first show at De Nor in Middelheim. Their debut - via Cortizona – received immediate accolades: "Sporen van punk, ambient, rock noir en stonergrunge tonen hoe veelzijdig Pruillip is", according to Knack Focus , that also gave the debut four stars. "Het debuut van ‘Pruillip’ grossiert prachtig in een miljoen schakeringen van zwart", wrote Humo, and it also gave the debut three and a half stars at the same time. Also: "Het impressionanante debuut van Pruillip hoort bij de beste Belgische releases van 2023" and is worth four stars, according to De Morgen.

20:00 - 20:45 @ Rijke Klarenkerk > SHIDA SHAHABI (SE) 

Just like Tirzah, Swedish-Iranian pianist Shida Shahabi recently received a rather unique invitation from PJ Harvey to join her at her Gunnersbury Park show in 2024. Shida’s latest album Living Circle (via the neoclassical label 130701) navigates between classical piano music, ambient and drones, and is sure to charm fans of Max Richter and A Winged Victory for the Sullen. She has already opened for the latter at the prestigious Barbican. Due to the former, she was able to appear at the Reflektor festival at the famous ElbPhilharmonie in the company of Kali Malone and Portico Quartet, amongst others. Shida Shahabi plays with the support of the Nordic Culture Fond.

20:30 - 21:20 @AB Flex > MOIN (UK) 

Italian drummer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist Valentina Magaletti has an outright impressive CV. She sat behind the skins with her highly personal percussive approach for the likes of Thurston Moore, Lafawndah, Mica Levi, Kamasi Washington, and Nicolas Jaar. She operates under the flags of Vanishing Twin (already at BRDCST in 2017) and Zongamin. This year she’s a guest of honour at BRDCST and will present two of her most prestigious projects, including the extremely explosive Moin. Pitchfork referred to the trio as reinventors of post-hardcore. VPRO/3voor12 about their visit to Le Guess Who?: “Post-punk, post-hardcore … noem Moin gerust ook post-apocalyptisch. Moin is zenuwslopend… op de allerbeste manier. Voor fans van nineties gitaarbands als Fugazi en Slint!”

21:30 - 22:15 @ AB Club > CHALK (UK) 

Chalk is an Irish, electronic post-punk trio from Belfast. “Muzikaal vissen ze in dezelfde poel als Shame, The Murder Capital en andere Fontaines D.C.’s, maar ze klinken elektronischer en filmischer”, says Dansende Beren. Their debut EP Conditions is brimming with howling guitars, a relentless rhythm section and a raw, deep-rooted spoken word style. Hot tip for 2024!

21:30 - 22:15 @ Rijke Klarenkerk > CLARISSA CONNELLY (DK)

Scottish-Danish composer, producer, singer, and multi-instrumentalist Connelly has already pocketed a Nordic Music Prize and was signed by Warp, just like BRDCST acts Autechre, Oneohtrix Point Never and Slauson Malone 1 . Influenced by Celtic mythology, Connelly navigates between the musical realms of both Kate Bush and Vashti Bunyan. Clarissa Connelly plays with the support of the Nordic culture Fond.

21:50 - 23:00 @ AB Flex > BCUC (SA)

The seven-member, Afrofuturistic punk collective BCUC (read: Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness) brings us a loud protest voice from Soweto. Their music is “a magnetic blend of traditional South African styles combining hypnotic polyrhythms with hip hop and psych-rock and fiery lead vocals”, according to KEXP. Their energetic performances made BCUC one of South Africa’s most successful musical exports. Their latest album Millions of Us was released via On The Corner (see too: Sidi Muraham, Khalab, …). More than rightly, a BRDCST headliner.

23:00 - 00:00 @ AB Club > BENEFITS (UK) 

Anyone looking at the Benefits website immediately knows what they’re all about: “We are benefits | we are a band | we shout”. Their fanbase includes such notorious fans as Steve Albini, Sleaford Mods, and Modeselektor. Geoff Barrow (Portishead) was so impressed that he signed them up to his Invada label right away. Their debut NAILS does hit the nail on the head and will resonate until BRDCST 2025, wanna bet?
