Pianist, improviser and composer Alister Spence has been regarded as a leading figure in contemporary improv music in Australia, and further afield, for more than three decades. He has an impressive track record, having worked with numerous internationally renowned musicians and artists, including Satoko Fujii, Ed Kuepper (The Saints), Lloyd Swanton & Tony Buck (The Necks), Myra Melford, Natsuki Tamura and Jim O’Rourke.
His solo work ranges from intimate piano meditations to energetic Fender Rhodes experiments, with recent and upcoming releases on the Room40 label. International press praises his music for its depth, imagination and uncompromising approach.
The Alister Spence Trio – also containing Lloyd Swanton – has established a strong international reputation through adventurous live performances and critically acclaimed albums. Spence has also initiated groundbreaking projects like Asteroid Ekosystem and Kira Kira, that focus on free improv and unconventional compositions.
He has toured extensively through Europe, Asia, Canada and the US, and is a welcome guest at prominent festivals. He also provides original music and compositions for film, theatre and orchestral projects. With more than forty albums to his name, he continues to reinvent himself as an artist.
