Belgian cellist seeks the limits of her instrument
This event is part of the BRDCST series, where left-field artists meet curious ears. Expect sounds that challenge, surprise, and stay with you.
At the end of February, Belgian cellist Nina Vanhoenacker released her first solo album, An unbalanced piece of wood, on the Spanish label Protomaterial Records. The album is an adventurous collection of recent works for solo cello – often enhanced by vocals, electronica and live processing – by a diverse group of composers, including Anqi Liu, JP Merz, David Fennessy, Eden Lonsdale, Christopher Cerrone and Vanhoenacker herself.
She specialises in contemporary classical music, free improv and experimental music. In 2024, she was selected by Klara as one of De Twintigers. As well as composing own work, she often collaborates with other composers, including Leilehua Lanzilotti, Mark Andre, David Fennessy, Baldwin Giang and Alireza Farhang. She has performed at various festivals and venues in Europe and North America.
Vanhoenacker is also a member of the Extended Music Collective (Britten Pears Young Artist 25-26), a chamber ensemble for new classical music, and of Inland Ocean (a cooperative of performers and visual artists in Europe, Canada and the US). A strong interest in interdisciplinary projects led to her creating music for film, dance, performance art and visual art.
