LeFtO presents the best up and coming talent from the jazz and hip-hop scenes!

AB turns 40 in September and we’re celebrating in style while the entire booking team takes a temporary break. Come again? Well, throughout the celebratory season, AB is handing the keys to the programming office over to a range of national and international curators with long-term associations with the venue.

One such curator is LeFtO. He has been one of the leading DJs in Belgium and beyond for nearly twenty-five years. He has introduced many new bands to Belgian radio and, through his Studio Brussel programme, has brought us the best of the London jazz scene, the crème de la crème of the rap scene and the very latest from the international electro scene. However, he has also provided a stepping stone to a wider public for a great deal of Belgian talent. On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of his Studio Brussel show, he has assembled a programme ranging from jazz to hip-hop and house:

AliA is just 20 years old, but has already been earmarked as one of the most promising Belgian DJs. In her deliciously danceable sets, the DJ from Leuven surfs effortlessly between funk and house via hip-hop and soul. Her outstanding musical knowledge combined with faultless technique is astonishing.

Blu Samu x Martha Da’ro x Miss Angel: the three queens of Belgian hip-hop take the stage together for the first time. Each of these rappers has had an amazing year so far. Miss Angel’s first single ‘Ghetto Superstar’ was an immediate hit. She blends old-skool hip-hop with UK grime and was picked up by the likes of Zwangere Guy, to whom she provided stunning support in AB. She can also be heard with Martha Da’ro on the soundtrack to the film ‘Binti’. Martha Da’ro has been another rising star of the past year. Her soulful hip-hop has received praise and her first single ‘Sugarman’ was Catch of the Day on Studio Brussel. The Belgian-Portuguese Salomé Dos Santos, also known as Blu Samu, played her first headline show this year in a sold-out AB Club. She explores wide musical horizons by blending hip-hop with soul, Brazilian vibes and funk. Her honest songs and lyrics reflect her thoughts.

Children of Zeus is the soul project of Konny Kon and Tyler Daley, two respected MCs from Manchester. Their Soundcloud page and several singles released by First Word Records garnered the attention of national radio. Their music is spreading like wildfire and more soul food is expected soon!

Black Flower is the remarkably international-sounding project by saxophonist/composer/key figure/multi-instrumentalist Nathan Daems. The main inspiration is undoubtedly the Ethiopian jazz of Mulatu Astatke and the Nigerian Fela Kuti’s Afrobeat. There are also echoes of John Zorn’s Masada and dub, along with (more than ever) Eastern influences.

Musicians: Nathan Daems (alto and baritone sax), Jon Birdsong (cornet, alto horn, percussion), Wouter Haest (keys), Simon Segers (drums), Filip Vandebril (bass).
