A must (!) for fans of Moor Mother, Angel Bat Dawid, Jamie Branch and Sault
Mourning [A] BLKstar is an impressive collective of musicians, writers and multimedia artists that was formed in Cleveland, Ohio. They describe themselves as ‘a multi-generational, gender and genre non-conforming amalgam of Black Culture dedicated to servicing the stories and songs of the apocalyptic diaspora’. Their rich, eclectic sound fuses funk, lo-fi soul and hip-hop with influences from jazz and 90’s beats, which generated rave reviews right from their first release.
Their latest – currently digital only – release ‘Celestial Bodies’ was a collaboration with Adult Swim, The Cleveland Museum of Art, and the German dance opera artist Christoph Winkler. Scratched Vinyl said of it: ‘Celestial Bodies is an incredible album born out of a unique collaborative space. It’s also a great continuation of the brilliant work they’ve been doing since their inception, creating a sound that few can even come close to touching. It’s full of beautiful imagery, exceptional musicianship, and it will take you on a hell of a journey from start to finish.’
Anyone who saw them at Le Guess Who? last year will agree that not showing up is not an option.
