This spring, there's a lot of exciting things to discover again at AB Club.
How about a hefty dose of tropical samba madness, psychrockedelic Latin, or psychedelic Japanese fulkfusion?
Some bands are ready for a big breakthrough (the Lambrini Girls!), others are taking their first steps in the live circuit, or sticking to their experimental sound for a smaller audience.
Dive into the concert calendar of AB Club:
TUE 18 MAR Pure Adult & Cassels
Pure Adult from Brooklyn make raw, dissonant punk & noise and are known for their wild live shows.
London duo Cassels' sound veers between post-punk and noise with math-rock elements.
THU 20 MAR Satanique Samba Trio
Don’t expect samba, forró, bossanova or lambada as you know them. This quintet (sometimes sextet) from Brasília injects traditional rhythms with virulence, dissonance and provocation to create something entirely new and exciting.
Prominent Latin-American magazine Sounds and Colours wrote of SST: “More avant-pagode craziness from Brasília's favourite sons. I love this band’s irreverent humour and the way that they constantly put themselves down while producing some truly original takes on traditional Brazilian genres such as samba and samba-jazz. They may describe the music itself as low-fidelity Brazilian music, but there’s a helluva lot more at play here."
26 MAR Los Pirañas
Los Pirañas is an international instrumental supergroup that has been pushing the boundaries of Latin tropical music for some time now. This band represents thé psychedelic sound of contemporary Colombia and has been spearheading the revival of the Colombian music scene.
SUN 4 MAY Sirens Of Lesbos
Eritrean-Sudanese-Swiss band with a groove-driven sound.
They combine influences from ‘90s British girl-pop, Afrobeats, electronic music and lo-fi indie pop acts.
SAT 17 MAI Mitsune
Mitsune combines traditional Japanese folk with jazz, eastern blues, rock and dance beats, as well as wild, cinematic and psychedelic sounds. The heart and soul of their music is the tsugaru shamisen, a three-stringed Japanese lute, once the favourite instrument of itinerant blind musicians in yesteryear Japan.
WED 21 MAY Shonen Knife
Shonen Knife from Osaka, was formed in 1981 by sisters Naoko and Atsuko and their friend Michie, long before the term 'riot girrrl' came into existence. The female trio gleefully taunted guitar snares and tarted every rule of music to the tune of imported Ramones covers.
Just like Japanese cult girl-band The 5,6,7,8s, Shonen Knife has been holding its own for more than 40 years now, in an ever-changing musical landscape, by sticking to what they do best: releasing their own quirky, catchy, feel-good pop-punk.
Their fans include greats like Sonic Youth and Nirvana. It would be no overstatement to say that they have had an enormous influence on the alternative rock scene. Kurt Cobain openly declared: "When I finally saw them live, I transformed into a hysterical nine-year-old girl during a Beatles concert. "
SAT 22 MAR Lambrini Girls
Lambrini Girls are the intrepid riot grrls who rock the music scene. This devastating punk duo from Brighton-consisting of Phoebe Lunny (vocals/guitar) and Lilly Macieira (bass)-is known for their straightforward punk with sharp, provocative lyrics. Inspired by bands like Savages, Le Tigre and Bikini Kill, they kick ass against the status quo with a heavy dose of black humour and raw energy
This club show is hopelessly sold out, but no worries, the Lambrini Girls are coming back to the main stage of AB on December 8th!
