Rebel Up label night with Satanique Samba Trio (BR) & Trance Plantations (Bxl)
The Brussels record label Rebel Up focuses on eclectic global sounds from near and far, featuring musicians from Brussels, the diaspora and internationally. From traditional to jazz, grooves and electronic beats. With +30 releases under their belt, Rebel Up deserves a celebration with two of their signings.
Trance Plantations is the latest brainchild of Nathan Daems and Falk Schrauwen (both members of Black Flower and Echoes of Zoo). They describe what they make as ‘fictional Tribe music (from space)’. That previously resulted in a self-titled debut album with the help of The Comet Is Coming members Danalogue and Betamax. The l follow-up ‘Behind your face’ was presented for the very first time at the W.E.R.F. records label night at AB about six months ago. Actually the album was released on W.E.R.F. and Rebel Up so they are back to open the evening.
Satanique Samba Trio is an instrumental avant-garde quintet – so no trio – that was established in 2003 with one goal: to deconsecrate the Brazilian musical heritage. So don’t expect samba, forró, bossanova or lambada as you know them. This quintet (sometimes sextet) from Brasília injects traditional rhythms with virulence, dissonance and provocation to create something entirely new and exciting.
Their effort to deconstruct Brazilian music’s most persistent clichés has so far resulted in fourteen albums, with Só Bad (2023) as most recent release. After a (post-)covid hiatus, they finally return to Europe to promote their new 7-inch vinyl Cursed Brazilian Beats Vol. 1 (successor to Vol. 2 from 2022). Brussels label Rebel Up! Records signed this release.
Prominent Latin-American magazine Sounds and Colours wrote of Só Bad: “More avant-pagode craziness from Brasília's favourite sons. I love this band’s irreverent humour and the way that they constantly put themselves down while producing some truly original takes on traditional Brazilian genres such as samba and samba-jazz. They may describe the music itself as low-fidelity Brazilian music, but there’s a helluva lot more at play here. (…) Everything is between a minute and a minute and a half, and within these limitations they play samba as though played by an acoustic Magic Band (*). As the album develops, the songs seem to become even more demented and deconstructed and, as with the Magic Band, you know they can play their instruments really well, but they just chose to sound like this."

Satanique Samba Trio displays a thorough disregard for conventions and enjoys leading their audience astray. Be prepared for a hearty dash of tropical madness that you can continue to experience all night long in ABClub and during the afterparty at café Bonnefooi with the help of Rebel Up DJ's SebCat & Drache MuMu.
