Senegalese legend finally back with new album
Orchestra Baobab is a true institution and a cornerstone of African music. The band was formed in 1970 in Dakar as a club orchestra, inspired by the Afro-Cuban fever that swept through West-Africa. The band very soon developed a unique style in which Maninka, Wolof and Serer sounds fused with Latin rhythms and timeless elegance.
From their first golden age to their remarkable revival in the early 2000s (led by producer and World Circuit guru Nick Gold), Orchestra Baobab reinvented its legacy time and time again, leaving each generation captivated by its hypnotic groove.
Before the new album Made in Sénégal is released next October, Orchestra Baobab will give us a taste of what is to come with an exclusive Live EP in April. This EP is an introduction to the band’s raw energy and timeless magic on stage, a living testament to their influence and mastery.
Made in Sénégal is the long-awaited second chapter of a musical journey in the form of a trilogy. After Made in Dakar (2007), it is another true love letter to Senegal’s musical roots and future. The combination of swaying rumba, Mandinka sounds, and Afro-Cuban echoes reflects the immortality of their music.
Each song explores a different facet of Senegal’s musical heritage, travelling from Casamance to Fouta, from Dakar to Saint-Louis. The strings and brass evoke the rhythms of an entire nation, swingingly balancing between tradition and modernity. Living legend Baaba Maal and a number of other special guests embody the bridge between generations.
The trilogy will one day culminate in Made in Africa, which is to unite the greats of African music. High time for this mythical band to return to AB, no less than 22 years after their previous visit.
