“Moor Mother might be the most radical Afrofuturist artist to emerge for years” (The Wire) + two musical soulmates
This event is part of the BRDCST series, where left-field artists meet curious ears. Expect sounds that challenge, surprise, and stay with you.
Moor Mother
A fifth(!) appearance at AB already for celebrated multidisciplinary artist Camae Ayewa, aka Moor Mother (US), who first performed at AB in 2017, then returned again in 2018 and 2023 with her impressive (free) jazz band Irreversible Entanglements, and surprised audiences in 2023 too by teaming up with Belgian bassist Farida Amadou.
She describes her music as “low fi/dark rap/blk girl blues/witch rap/coffee shop riot gurl songs/black ghost songs”. Camae’s discography now easily boasts some twenty albums that meander adventurously between jazz, hip-hop and noise. These have been released both under her own name and under the moniker 700 Bliss (with DJ Haram), as well as in collaborations with members of avant-metal band SUMAC, Nicole Mitchell (see: The Art Ensemble of Chicago), Fatboi Sharif, The Bug, Sons of Kemet, Armand Hammer, … among others.
Recently, her multifaceted career has taken a turn towards more melody, vocals and song structure. She based her album Jazz Codes (2023) on her poetry project, paying tribute to jazz icons like Woody Shaw or Mary Lou Williams. For the music, she collaborated with Swedish DJ/producer Olof Melander.
Expect the unexpected: lots of new work, improv and a selection from her now extensive body of work, all backed-up by her musical soulmates Aquiles Navarro and Olof Melander.
Aquiles Navarro + Olof Melander
Internationally renowned American trumpet-player Aquiles Navarro has been based in Brussels for a while, and recently took to the stage at AB during BRDCST for DJ Haram’s set, as well as during the tribute to J Dilla by Polish jazz/hip-hop band Omasta.
Aquiles is a part of the ten-piece ensemble Sound of Brussels Orchestra – containing the likes of Alejandra Borzyk (bodies), Louise Van den Heuvel, Vitja Pauwels, Kaito Winse and Imane Guemssy – that offers an answer to the question: “What would an orchestra look like if it was invented in Brussels today?”
On Heritage of the Invisible II (2020), he teamed up with Irreversible Entanglements-drummer Tcheser Holmes to deliver an essential album for the well-reputed International Anthem label. Together with Moor Mother, he forms part of Irreversible Entanglements. Navarro also contributed to her albums Jazz Codes, Circuit City and Analog Fluids Of Sonic Black Holes. With Swedish DJ/producer Olof Melander, he worked on the album Tangles (2024).
