Exquisite and adventurous jazz triple-bill (with a postpunk excursion)
The aftershow with VULA VIEL is freely accessible for everyone with a ticket for this concert.
Avishai Cohen Big Vicious (us)
Trumpet player (!) Avishai Cohen has been adored for some years now by all who have seen him at work live. LA Weekly heralded: ‘Many say Cohen has assumed the spirit of the great Miles Davis, reincarnated into a powerful combination of lyricism and intellect. He is among the best in the world.’ He heads to AB with his prestigious Big Vicious project, whereby he is accompanied by two drummers (!) and two guitarists (!) where Radiohead's ‘Pyramid Song’ and Massive Attacks ‘Teardrop’ often make it into the set list and are superbly reworked.
Binker Golding’s Band (uk)
Saxophonist Binker Golding has already worked previously with drummers Moses Boyd and Yussef Dayes (see: Yussef Kamaal) and also with free jazz saxophonist Evan Parker. Golding’s recently released album ‘Abstractions of Reality Past and Incredible Feathers’ – recorded in the famous Abbey Road Studios with the likes of Joe Armon-Jones – received plenty of praise waved its way. All About Jazz: ‘The sax/piano-fueled breaks are fascinating, challenging and evoke the past while feeding the ears with the possibilities of what is yet to come.’
Vula Viel (uk)
A delicious aftershow! With a rhythmic somewhere between jazz and postpunk, African rhythms and more global sounds. Iggy Pop: ‘Dance to it, make love to it!’
Gilles Peterson: ‘One of my discoveries of the London Jazz Festival.’ BBC3: ‘One of the most exciting young UK groups we’ve heard this year!’ Jazzwise: ‘Like Portico Quartet on steroids.’
