At the end of every set of the latest Radiohead tour you would always hear a Sun Ra track. No Flying Lotus, Kamasi Washington or STUFF. without the injection of Sun Ra’s afrofuturism. Even Solange recently shared a stage with Sun Ra Arkestra. Basically: the band that has continued to tour since’93, after Sun Ra 'headed back to Saturn' at the end of his life. He left around about 100 albums – of which, 'Jazz in Silhouette' (’59) is seen as a masterpiece and the afrofuturistic science fiction film ‘Space Is The Place’ is seen as his best known work. Since’93, his band Sun Ra Arkestra has been touring the world tirelessly under the auspices of saxophonist Marshall Allen, now 95 (!). He stood aside Sun Ra since the late ’50s.
In the press
‘In concert, the Arkestra still has that forward-moving spark.’ (Rolling Stone)‘One of the most distinctive and original saxophonists of the postwar era.’ (Rolling Stone over saxofonist Marshall Allen)
