Traditional music education is built on structure, technique and discipline.
Of course, a strong base is needed when learning a new skill, but there isn’t much space to play and get inspired by completely different musical frameworks.

Learning how to communicate through music is a skill and Lander Gyselinck is coming to AB Lab on Monday 27/05 to tell us more about it.
Throughout his career he has experimented and improvised with music, proving that perfection is pointless if there’s no feeling when you’re playing.
Perfection is creativity’s biggest enemy. Some of the best ideas came by breaking the rules of what’s supposed to be “right” and letting yourself be guided by instinct.
With this Masterclass, we want to invite as many creatives as possible to question the media in which they operate. Even if you’re not a drummer, a producer or composer, I think this session will motivate you too.
He will focus on four themes:
- Groove as a language – how microtiming, feel and placement make the difference between playing correctly and communicating musically.
- Improvisation beyond jazz – improvisation as an essential skill for every modern drummer, including within grooves and beats.
- Hybrid drumming & sound design – combining acoustic drums with samples, loops and electronics.
- PhD in the Arts – on his doctoral journey and how albums such as Hihats In Trees form part of his artistic research.
